Vertical Combustion and FT1 Test

Vertical combustion and FT1 test:

1060.1 For vertical test samples of finished wire and cable or flexible cords, during the application of standard test flames for 5 times, each lasting for 15 seconds, and during or after the flame application intervals, a) the flame must not propagate along its length; b) the flame must not spread to nearby combustible materials.

The standard test flame has a nominal height of 125 mm and emits heat at a nominal rate of 500 W (1700 Btu/h). The flame application interval should be 15 seconds, regardless of whether the flame of the test specimen automatically extinguishes within 15 seconds after the last flame application. Unless cotton layers are not used, such as in FT1 testing, the test should be conducted as described in sections 1080.2-1080.11 and 1060.2, using one of the fuels described in section 1080.3, a standard test room burner, and calibration as described in section 1080.1. The test results are evaluated as indicated in section 1060.3.

1060.2 Tilt the burner forward into position to apply a gas flame to the test sample. Keep the burner in place for 15 seconds, then quickly tilt it backward to the stop to detach the flame from the test sample for 15 seconds. Apply the flame a total of 5 times, each time for 15 seconds, with a 15-second interval between applications. Apply the flame to the test sample again 15 seconds after the last application, regardless of whether the combustion of the test sample automatically extinguishes within 15 seconds after the last application.

1060.3 If the indicator flag of any sample is burned or carbonized by 25% or more (ignoring the soot or brown charred parts that can be wiped away with a cloth or finger) after each of the 5 fire exposures, the wire, cable, or cord shall be rated as propagating flame along its length. If any sample emits burning or luminous particles or burning droplets that ignite cotton layers at any time (not applicable to FT1 test) (ignoring the carbonization of non-burning cotton layers), the wire, cable, or cord shall be rated as capable of propagating flame to nearby combustible materials. If any sample continues to burn for more than 60 seconds after 5 fire exposures, the wire, cable, or cord shall be rated as capable of propagating flame to nearby combustible materials.
